In my basement I get free wireless from a few neighbourhood sources. The signal strength is very good at one end of my basement, but my computer desk is at the other end of the basement.

I'd simply like to place a device at one end of my basement to receive the good wireless signals and then send the data, via cable, to my PC.

What would that device be called?

Would any basic router, with a 4port switch and 1 or 2 antennas on the back, be able to perform this functionality?

Or does such a device have a different name... like... bridge, repeater, relay, access point?

Would you have control, on the PC, of what wireless networks the device sees and uses?
