One of my machines is an old Compaq Presario 860(DX486). Both the form factor and power connector are not standard (AT). But it is a nice case, with toolless access. Anyone every put a newer motherboard in an old Presario?

might as well get a new computer. Most compaqs are very propreitary. You'll lose your sound card, video card and the modem might not work. The compaq software will not work either--if you use media pilot forget about it. Hard drive,Cd-rom, power supply and case is all you'll have.

If it is a non standard type of mother board, the system likely uses a riser card, and cannot be upgraded. Keep the old hard drive and cd-rom, but the case and board will be useless... This is very unfortunate, because alot of the compaq cases like you said are very nice cases. However, if you want tool-less cases, look for diamond cases. They are very nice cases, with high quality power supplies, and also most of their newer line are tooless...
Good luck,
Collinj
