Symptoms of a bad bios/motherboard battery?

Old Core2 Duo (or just Core Duo?) laptop, Acer Travelmate 4230 with a fresh Linux Mint Cinnamon install. Time on the desktop keeps changing, and it seems to be having issues when it resumes from hibernation, sitting locked for periods of time, sometimes leading to me forcing shutdown by holding the power button down and then rebooting. I'm inclined now t think this is not due to the OS but to a failed motherboard battery. The laptop's main battery is still useful, even though I always have it on the psu.

Do the slow resume and lockup sound like what could be expected from an expired bios battery?

Not expecting an answer from Gilles -- I doubt you've kept using a laptop that old. :)

No, My oldest laptop is 3 years old, I have 3 and replace 1/year. ;)

But the Time, which keeps changing, is a good indication that the bios battery should be replaced.

+1.

I just did this on all three laptops in the family here. My wife's 7 year old HP was a snap-it was under the hard drive. My 7 year old HP (different model) was more involved. My oldest, an 11 year old HP, took real heart surgery. Thank goodness for Google and really good documentation from HP (these were all business-class models). Loss of time was the symptom on two of them, and I replaced it on the other for good measure.

I had two P4 systems (2003-2006) which had CMOS battery issues in the last few years, so it would be reasonable timeframe-wise for a Core laptop to have such issues.
Also, symptoms outside of wrong date/time are corrupted CMOS settings, so I'd wager it could be an issue if it is accessing the BIOS on resume.

In my case, I had no issues with the clock but was sometimes prompted with this on boot, which got worse in time :
