SoundBlaster still the best?

are they still considered the best by most of you? I'm building a new rig and I haven't been all that thrilled with the Sound Blaster audigy in my current rig. Very low volume from the microphone, even with the 20 DB gain boost engaged. I've also seen others complain about this on the web. Anybody have any better soundcard recommendations?

If you're not an audio freak with an expensive audio setup, you might want to try using the on-board sound first and see if it suits you. They have gotten noticeably better in the last few years to the point where a discrete sound card is almost a luxury; most great sound cards cost $100 and upwards nowadays. Also, Vista and Win 7 has much improved sound mixing in software without needing dedicated hardware.

that's exactly what I've heard, thank you. I guess that pretty much clinches it. I'm going to give it a go. I can always slap in a sound card later on.
