Many of those board today are made with low, medium and high standards options. Just because 1 chip is missing on the board does not mean all the rest of the board will take a chip if it is put in place. I also doubt the board firmware will look and be able to make it work.
A good example would be phone motherboards where they sell different memory size. but inside the hardware is the same, only missing a few component or using a different chip that has the same pin out.
