as per another thread, I am refreshing my pc with an ssd and a switch to 64bit w7.

ebuyer currently have the 95w 1055t phenom at a reasonable price which I'm tempted by as;

it would stave off a new pc build for a few more years
would speed up adobe premiere elements a lot ( I think)
if I don't buy it now there won't be any left soon as amd aren't making new cpu's that fit am2+ or have ddr2 support

any thoughts - will I notice the speed and increase in cores in everyday use or in premiere?

IMO, I wouldn't do it unless the price is dirt cheap. Not enough of a performance difference.

that's the kind of sense I'm looking for ! If it makes enough difference in premiere then I can convince myself but at the moment its just satisfying the desire to upgrade as far as I can go with a platform before starting a new one (although it would also benefit all the platforms below it as I cascade down the cpu to the htpc or other spare box)

If Premiere Elements coding is similar to Sony Vegas Pro,
Realistic increase in performance should be around 20% +.

Comparison chart between the two processors with various software,

ok, well i guess i have an upgrade itch which needs scratching and a whole heap of video clips to edit and stitch together so

which is the better option out of;

upgrade athlon 620 (4cores at 2.6ghz) with 3gb ddr2 800 to phenom 1055 (6 cores at 2.8 hz + 6gb cache) with 6gb ddr2 800

OR

keep the athlon 620 and upgrade the motherboard to AM3+ with 16gb ddr3 1600 + 6gb sata + usb3. i can then move up to bulldozer next year

May as well grab the 1055T, since the AM3+ platform is expected to be replaced sometime this year...
Even if it is not and AMD goofs again, expect sometime next year.

well, i bit the bullet and upgraded. swapped the athlon x4 620 for the phenom 1055t 95w and the difference is noticable. adobe premiere is much faster and the rest of the system much snappier all round

Glad you're enjoying the new processor Weeboll.
Your timing is good.
AMD is phasing out the hex cores so they're not as readily available as before.
Finding a 1055T with TDP of 95w for a good price is becoming more difficult.

The two extra cores frees up the resources for multitasking rather nicely.
I was working on a AMD AMD Athlon II X4 635 a few weeks ago and noticed when AVStoDVD using HCenc option was being used, it tied up all four cores with work.
A 1090T on the same system permitted the AVStoDVD to run while I was browsing and such...
I even transcoded two AVI files with AVStoDVD simultaneously and did not encounter any hiccups. Definitely a time saver. :)
