I am looking to purchase a laptop. Don't really know much about Windows 8, so would prefer Windows 7. Also, I am planning to run some engineering programs such as AutoCAD and SAP2000. Do you guys have some recommendations?

Thanks

What is your budget?
Will you be traveling with it often or will it mainly be used like a desktop?

I was hoping that for $800-$900, I could get something that serves my purpose. Not sur if that is reasonable.

I would like to get something that is medium sized (convenient enough to carry in my backpack, but not too small that I will have a hard time working on drawings, etc.).

Appreciate your help

I would suggest looking at business class laptops. You're more likely to find non-glossy screens, a strong preference of mine, and the build quality tends to be higher, more rugged. Given your size requirements, and as someone who often carries a laptop in a backpack, I'd look at the 14" models.

+1 on that. I have been partial to HP buisness laptops for several years. They have been sturdy in construction and have simply run and run. An added benefit of that class of machine is ordinarily a three year warranty. The HP site has them within your price range, especially if pre-configured/on special.

If you intend on getting any work done in AutoCAD 2013, you're going to need a minimum of a Dell Precision M4700 Mobile running at least a 3rd generation i7, a minimum of 8GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M graphics with a 1920x1080 LCD . . . which will run roughly $1500.

See Autodesk for more info.
