Here the (difficult to find!) Maxtor Acoustic Management Utility, AMSET.EXE. You can use it to almost completely silence hard drive seeks, or virtually half seek time on drives that have "quiet" mode enabled by default. More info here: http://www.adriansrojakpot.com/Speed_Demonz/Maxtor_Silent_Store/Maxtor_Silent_Store_02.htm

It works on recent drives e.g. DiamondMax 9. I get about 19-20ms random access seek time on my drives in "quiet" mode and sub 14ms in "fast" (as measured by HDTach).

Just a personal observation,
Not particularly impressed with the BenQ DW1650 DVD burners.
BenQ appears to still have quality control issues during manufacturing.
If they are too lazy to stamp the labelling for Master, Cable Select, Slave, so that it is clearly legible,
Not sure what other corners they may have cut.
And what the bleep! is with that burning smell with all those drives?!

Took a look at three different DW1650 models with supposedly three different shipping dates.

Benq is just the new name for Acer. Apparently they figure a name change will change thier quality control, or their pr in quality control.

Thanks.
I was aware of that but due to some rave reviews of burning quality,
I decided to grit my teeth and try them again.

UPDATE:
Needless to say,
I have already gone back to using LG brand...

well thats a shame. i honor you for giving people a second chance. as for me, never- not for these guys at least. too many hours in my early years just going nuts trying to figure out why brand new hardware doesnt work. that, or if it did work i would get the cd out to my car, get nice and pumped to hear the music, only to get skips and jitters the whole way though. pissed me off to no end, it was only soon after that i found places like hardwarecentral to help me find real hardware.

so its samsung and lg then. i can add something else- you know those uber-NEC burners? like the ND3540a's that everyone was dying to get a year and a half ago? they are lame too. both of mine barely burn or play anything anymore. what doesnt even work in my htpc or main pc plays absolutely perfect in my laptop's dvd read only drive  and everything i burn with them now barely works at all. very weak burns, and i never buy anything expect tiayo yuden blanks....

edit- uh... a year later i guess?

I avoided the NEC burners due to premature failures.
Dying within a year of purchase...
