Parallel Port Problems

My son's computer has an External 1G SparQ Drive attached to the printer port. Windows shows it using a ECP Printer Port. The SparQ Drive works fine. Connected to the SpqrQ Drive is a Canon Printer. The Printer will not work. The Printer will not work even if connected directly to the ECP Port. There was a sound card problem, but it was removed. Do we need to change the ECP Port to a LTP#1 Port. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
