MPEG4 recording

i want:

*MPEG4 (!) Recording from TV // Video // other sources
*DVDs shown on my TV-monitor

800Mhz Amd should be enough

the videocard is most neccessary to record mpeg4 am i right ?

*MSI KT7Pro mit Raid100
*AMD Duron 800 // 850
*768MB Sdram
* Gf. MX mit Tv in / out
*videocard (dont know what, but not to expensive if possible)
*SB Life for Surround-sound
*1x IBM 20GB 7200 U/min Udma 100 (system)
*4x IBM 60GB 5400 U/min Udma 100 Raid0
*Toshiba or Pioneer 16 / 40 DVD drive
*Slimline // Desktop case 300W
*W2k SP2

to take it to the point....

*which software to record ?
*if i get myself a tv-monitor with 100hz technologie, do i get better results, than a standard monitor ?
*do you have some hints for me, or links on how MPEG4 recording could be done

You need:
codec DivX 3.11
capture & editing VirtualDub 1.4d
http://www.divx-digest.com/ http://www.divx.com/ http://doom9.org/

Better way (for High resolution) is to capture to MJPEG at first, then to MPEG4. MJPEG codecs - Pegassus PICVideo2 (my choice)

MPEG4 recording is simple as audio recording.

Best graphic card that support MPEG4 recording are ATI Radeon cards, but best quality you would get with Pinnacle products, special cards just for video editing and recording.

Better monitor has nothing to do with MPEG recording, it is related with your eyes and head. If you buy low-end monitor you while probably have headaches.

I don’t know why do you need DVD drive why not go with DVDRW.


Sigma designs also offer some good hardware products for video recording.

I can’t say nothing specific but hope this helps.

I was very disappointed with quality of video recording on all graphic cards including ATI that supposed to be the best.

Have you tried Matrox Marvel G400? At high quality they kick some serious audiovisual @ss, but they also kick alot of disk space

Nope I have not tried Matrox because @ that time they had to many driver issues and I was not wiling to bother with that.

I have tried
ELSA TNT2Pro with 5 vido in/outs
ASUS GeForce 2
Asusu TNT2
ATI rage VIVO
ATI all in wonder Rage
ATI RADEON VIVO


Worst of all are ASUS cards

If you're planning to do a real time encoding, then forget it.

800 MHz is too slow. To get 30 FPS full frame rate (depending on video resolution) you'll need something around 2 GHz at least. Probably even faster.

That depends on the resolution of the source, Mole. The encoding speed should drop like a rock as the resolution of the input video is reduced.

Ditto with Mole, you should first save it as raw data (that's a way to tell and it will take LOTS of disk space) and then convert it to divx (for higher resolutions), or to mpeg4 (for lower resolutions).

Basically divx and mpeg4 are the same, in fact, the divx is a modified version of mpeg4 that allows higher resolutions.

I assume that the source should have around 480 or 512 vertical resolution.

But even VCD resolutions at 352*240 NTSC or 352*288 PAL, 800 MHz won't be enough for real time encoding.

As an example 720x480 in MJPEG maximum quality stresses a PIII 733 with 256MB RAM with a G400, with hardware capture to top that. Since DivX encoding is only done in software now it would kill your processor like Mole said. Even if lower resolutions may help, DivX codecs aren't mean to be used for real-time recording. You would need to do like POKOT and Luis G said if you want to create DivX/MPEG 4 videos.
