my power-on LED didn't like 12 volts. It exploded instantly.

LEDS are devices which require 0.6V to operate, and are always used in series with a protective resistor to limit current. So dont be surprised

Damn!! And I had overclocking my LED's as one of my weekend projects. I guess that idea is out the window.
