My daughter has a 233mh 32 meg ram. running win 98.The cd drive started to not let her install from a cd. She had to erase everything and reinstall win. 98. Now it will freeze up the computer when the cdrom drive is used,even to play music. It did install one program after she reinstalled. She did not install any xtra drivers, she has cleaned the drive, and all the cds, and there are no conflicts or error messages. She has also uninstalled the cdrom, and let win 98 reinstall it. nothing helps. tia.

if u have had the case open before or if u have jarred the case it's possible the cables attached to the back of the cdrom have come loose. if the ribbon cable isn't in snug or if the power cable is loose it could be causing trouble. check the ribbon cable both at the back of the cdrom and on where it attaches to the motherboard. otherwise if you've had the cdrom for a while and used it alot the drive could just be wearing out and need replaced.

The case had never been touched , but we opened it and checked all the connections, they are fine. we tried the drive again, and it froze the computer again.We also tried turning down the display acceleration, that did not work either.tia.

Make sure that you have DMA feature turned off.
Device Manager-->CD-ROM-->
Unclick DMA feature
