Ive been having problems burning cd's of mp3s. The other day (and this has happened before) the CD starts off fine but part way through the tracks have a realy annoying crackling sound. Then today i burnt a CD and when played in my CD played and the new one in the lounge it plays a second or two, then the next second or so are silent and so on. Any idea's whats causeing the problem? Its happened on Imation and Sony CDs (the only two bands ive used). Im using Nero 5. Ive tried buring at 4x (the slowest nero would let me go and im using an Acer 40x24x10 CD-RW. Any ideas what could be causeing the problem?

Imation can be poor – it is mostly crappy CMC. But Sony is usually made by either Sony or Taiyo Yuden and is decent.

The only thing I can think of might be heat if it tends to happen say on the second or third CD you burn in succession. Or maybe the problem is in the MP3 files.

Try Feurio – it would at least eliminate software: http://www.feurio.net/English/index.shtml

Well it happens after the first burn and i dont think its a problem with the mp3 files because the problem with crackling happens only at the end of the CD no mater what song is in there. But Feurio seems to work fine (even with the imation CD). So thanks for the help! :)

bet ya its your firmware on your cdrw. i used to have an acer and had the same problems you have. their often updated firmware makes your drive more compatible with media, and it works. it is between the drive and your blank cds is where the problem is.

i would go to http://www.benq.com/drivers/storage_drivers.html and follow instructions to update your cdrw firmware

Okay well i can burn CDs for music with Feurio (aslong as i keep it under 20x) but now i need something to burn data. I tried burning some large mpeg files the other day but each CD contained an error in atleast one of the mpegs.

Nero5 is about as good as it gets. If you are getting errors it is likely your burner/media combination. Some burners don’t like some media. Any software is likely to give the same error rate.

You could try the Sony CD Extreme. With the PX engine updates it works with most 24X burners. I find it very robust software, but I doubt it will solve your problem.

CD Extreme: http://151.199.135.250:8080/extreme.html

PX engine update: http://eval.veritas.com/downloads/pro/exe/pxEngine358.exe

Manual: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dlagreement.zulu?dlid=cdrw/downloads/cdx_manual102500.pdf

Just select “Data CD” from the opening wizard. It automatically sets up for multi-session. Nothing to do but record.
