I have an old 486 100mhq compaq. I bought a new cd rom for it. The problem is, i can't get windows to acknowledge it. I don't know how to get a prompt for it in file manager so i can run a cd from it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I ran the setup disk from dos mode the way you are supposed to. it said my configuration was complete, now restart your computer. I did that, and when i got to windows it was like nothing changed. Is it possible to use the cd drive in dos? If so, can i just get windows 95 and set it up from dos mode so i don't have to mess with windows 3.1 setup? Thanks for your help!

Actaully, the easiest way to to get WIN98. The boot disk will load all the CD drivers you need to install WIN98 itself. Then, you don't have to worry about that either.

Try the CD-ROM in DOS mode, and see how it goes. Usually, there are drivers on the disk for WIN3.1 too that you may need to use for Win3.1 to see the new drive.
