    ZIP drive 100mb internal problems

    Hi there,

My NEC ZIP drive 100mb internal is behaving a bit oddly.

Whenever i try to write or erase a big file (10+ mb) it locks up. Sometimes it's light will flash from time to time while it is supposed to be writing, but apperantly nothing happens. Why? Is it a faulty drive?

Because of that whenever i want to erase something i have to format the disk, because formating works fine.

BTW my disks are ok, as use them at work normaly. WTF can it be?

    I'm running WinME on a EPOX 8KTA3+ with a Duron 800mhz (not oc'd)

    Thanks in advance

it sounds like part of the via pci latency problem [more info from this website for the abit kt7 motherboard

the problem relates to drives using the kt133a chipset

i had this problem and fixed it by flashing the bios to the latest revision [at the time 3R] and using the via 580_311 patch, which can be downloaded, either from the above link or from here

i found that i was unable to write or delete from the drive, although i could copy from it. in win98se the locks that resulted from trying would frequently pull the system down. the patch is a little slow but does work and means that the drive is usable.

    hope that helps

    Hey thanks for the reply.

Is it the patch you were refering to?

3.11 BETA - Improves performance in Win2K. Supports 686B southbridge and ATA100. Includes both a VSD and a Miniport driver. Miniport recommended. Also includes new IDE utility. Now integrated into 4.27 4-in-1 driver.

May also solve problems with Zip drives.

It says that it improves performance in Win2k, but i'm usin WinME. Can i still use this patch?

    Thanks again

i'm running it happily in win2000 and win98se, it appears to work in both operating systems well enough

no guarantees that it'll work in winme but it might be worth a try. make a restore point in restore to be on the safe side, and back up any important data. better safe than sorry
