laptop batteries

have a Sony Viao laptop and recently I've noticed that when I charge my battery in the laptop to 100% that when I shut down and disconnect the power supply and try to power up on the battery it won't do it. When I reapply the power supply and boot up and check the battery. The status is suddenly 1%. Any ideas?

How old is the laptop? Nicad batteries only typically last 1-2 years. After that, performance degrades and usually one or more cells shorts out from crystal growth. It might happen sooner, depending on use. So, the recharger detects the voltage peak indicating 100% charge, but the voltage is too low to start up your laptop. Check it with a voltmeter to be sure, but I betcha your battery is dead

Have you tries cleaning the contacts on both the battery and the notebook?

I'll try cleaning the contacts. If that doesn't work then I'll take it to our local battery supply store up the road and have them test it. Thanks to all for your advice.
