What's the deal with the disappearing posts?

Geez I've noticed a lot of closed threads and disapearing posts in this forum of late! What's the deal? Does it say somewhere in the disclaimer that posts must not offend collinj's sensibilities? Relax...take a chill pill....laugh once in a while!

I've also noticed that even some of my posts has been deleted. Looks like either the forum software or some unknown moderator/admin's mentality has gone down the toilet.

I'll investigate what or who been behind it and deal with it accordingly.

The only time I lock threads is when people are trolling, spamming, breaking board rules etc. I have a job to do here, and I am going to keep doing it. There are board rules here, and I WILL enforce them.

As for disapearing posts, the only time that I EVER delete posts or topics is when somebody is being very abusive, vulger, posting WAREZ or PORN or similar things. I have not deleted a thread in a while, and its been longer since I have deleted any individual posts. And from what I have been reading online lately is that the UBB has problems when it gets to the size of this one. I have seen many threads and posts dissapear myself, but I have not closed them.

There are 1/2 a dozen other Administrators on this message board, why do you assume that it is me that is deleting posts? Because I actually do my job around here??

    Nice, very nice.

I am probably taking some risk saying this but unfortunately I was born with a strong compulsion to speak my mind and stand up for the truth, and things which I believe in. Nutball/banned is a personal friend of mine and he posted the "whats the difference between a duck?" thread from my computer with me sitting here. I was sleep deprived, a bit giddy, and lmao. You closed the thread! I saw nothing abusive or rulebreaking about it, and though it had little relevance, it was no worse than the still active "Join seti@home post", in my opinion, but still you closed it. This was just last weekend. Then, when he complained about it, you banned him, and (I believe), and deleted his post of complaint. I saw nothing particularly abusive or rulebreaking about that one either, even though he comlained and named you personally, he was not lying or using abusive language or anything. I have never seen any of my posts dissappear, but I find it suspiscious that that one did. How many threads have you closed about this vs. that because you feel the particular debate has been done to death? Nothing abusive or against the rules there either, and obviously people are interested in the topics, but you see fit to deny us the choice to join the healthy debate, which I admit sometimes annoys me, but also can sometimes be informative as well. I disagree on how you handle things, and think you throw your weight and power around to freely on here, for too little reason. I dont hate you, and will not complain any more so please do not delete this post, or ban me. I am done with this subject. But geez is it possible to lighten up and not take everything so personally?

I closed that thread because somebody who has never posted before comes in and posts that topic full of BS, then I start getting complaints about it.

If I get a complaint, I will look into it. It probably wouldnt have bothered me if it was done by an actual member here, but it was done by somebody who has never posted here, and looked to cause some sort of problems. So I locked the thread and told him to not do it again in my forums.

Then he posts another thread and insults me directly, so I deleted that thread and banned his account. I only give one warning to trouble makers, and I did that. He didnt heed it so I banned his account.

I am getting sick and tired of people comming in here to just cause trouble, it is starting to piss me off. I may have closed a couple of topics that were borderline, but that is my call. If somebody disagree's thats fine, but insulting and the like is not acceptable.

    Sometimes I wonder...

Read your posts for inconsistancies....I see a few. I read the post you deleted, it was no insult....a statement of fact as I recall it. Close this thread (after you reply, as I'm sure you will) I can't argue with you....I will lose. Can you never admit a wrong? Go ahead ban me too...you're GOD here! Sorry I couldn't keep my promise about shutting up about this topic, I will try to forget it now, and avoid all of the forums that you moderate.

Who are you trying to convince that you don't care? Me, or yourself?

Nutball's original post was no more BS than the Microsoft Tech thread and Nutball's was in the correct forum. Maybe we should be limited to taliking just about hardware, but I like the Tech thread and the logic puzzles that someone posted a couple weeks ago.

Anybody who emailed you over Nutball's thread needs to be medicated.

I tried to stay out of this discussion for some time now because I don't want any trouble with anyone around here.

But here goes. I'm afraid I have to back up markjs and Nutball here. Collin, I'm sure you have good intentions around here. But let's fface it. I've noticed you've been acting quite "sky high" ever since you got the admin status and I *know* many people in here agree with me. Sure, to post on this forum is not a right, but a priveledge. But it's an even more priveledge to be get a moderator status and admin. Don't abuse your powers too much. And don't show it off too much that you are an admin here. I noticed on another thread you talked about "your forums" Well, there is NO SUCH TING. It's NOT your forum. You got the moderator job because you e-mailed Michael Furdyk just like me. But I didn't see any point in begging for a admin status.

Ever since I've been moderator I did delete a few posts and threads. But usually it's because of cross posting or duplicate posts. I do rarely delete something because *I* feel it offensive.
I did have some people complaining when I deleted a post about the political issue in Yugoslavia. But IMO it was the right thing to do.

I advise you to show more flexible and humble. Our job is to stay in the background and clean the dirt. Not proclaim our presence to everybody.

Also banning/deleting a user is IMO an abuse of power. There is no reason whatsoever to delete a user since he can easily register again anyway. It's enough to just delete any inapropriate posts and in the end they'll get bored and dissapear by themselves.

Exacly who did complain about Nutball's post? Was there many people or just some guy? Perhaps you could post his complain in here or e-mail me a copy? You can delete out the user's e-mail if he wants to be anonymous.

I think somebody should rename this thread to "Mole tells it like it is".

collinj: a moderator/admin's job is to stay in the background, keep the wheels turning, be helpful to people that have asked a question and not been answered yet, and delete posts that definitely need deleting (duplicates, warez/porn, very offensive material etc). BTW, tasteless jokes about JFK Jr are not offensive enough to warrant deletion, I haven't seen any around but may as well cover all bases

markjs is right, take a chill pill. You flout your status too much. Don't give people an easy reason to hate you.

Oh, and don't get sucked into an argument. It just shows that you're insecure about your position and feel that you have to defend it all the time. I was just thinking how ironic it was that you are insecure about your position and yet go around making a big show of yourself because you're a moderator. "Flout while it lasts?"

To be completely honest I'm not sure if you're moderator material. There are those that get power and have power (Mole), and then there are those that get power and USE power (you). The people who are always showing off their power are the ones that people despise. The inference of course is that the majority of people think Mole's a good bloke (bet u didn't see that one coming Mole!! hehehe......).

And no I'm not sucking up, lick my nut sack if you think I am. I have no interest in becoming a moderator here....

I also have EVERY right to close ANY thread that is not beneficial to this BBS. --collinj
That quote was from the "nvidia vs 3dfx" thread, somebody complained about you closing another thread and you said you'd closed it because it had been "done to death". In my opinion that is not sufficient reason to close a thread. If people want to argue the same thing over and over let them be. Maybe they're bored. Let them be. Abuse - yes close the post. warez/porn - close that baby down. Spirited debates (even if rehashed) - leave them be. nobody's forcing you to read the whole thing again.

It's not your place to go around locking each thread that mentions something that has been said before. People often miss posts, so if you close all the threads they'll end up posting new threads asking the same old questions that would have been answered in a debate, such as the amount of difference between V3's "24 *bull***** bit colour" vs TNT2's "true" 32 bit colour.

The way to stop people posting stupid questions and rehashing old debates is to get them visiting web pages and FAQs, maybe HWC could post a few more articles on this sort of thing and people can check that page before coming into the forums.

tharkun8's post in the 3dfx vs nvidia thread:
I know from reading previous topics that this can be ugly ( and re-hashing of old arguments) but it still helps people building new machines like myself. After reading all the talk (and sniping), I decided on going with a TNT2 card.
    <snip>
Keep up the talk. Trust me, it's helping somebody out there.
'nuff said.... it's always amusing to say something and then stumble upon a post that supports exactly what I've been saying (if in a long winded way).

Collinj - I sincerely respect your opinion on all things hardware related. You really know what you're talking about. That's why you get posts like "Hey Colinj what do you think" or whatever. But you need to lighten up.

Nutball, a brand new member, maybe not having much to contribute, tried to get to know us his own way. He did not insult anyone, yeah he's eccentric, but that's cool.

If anyone looked at the post once, they know what the theme was. If it's not for them then they shouldn't click on it again.

I hope you will still help w/ my dilemmas even though I don't agree w/ you 100% of the time.

You were wonderfull getting the new forum up,

Thank you all for backing me up. I was starting to think that either I was alone in my feelings on this issue, or everyone was afraid to speak their mind. Collin, I too respect your knowlege, and I now have my Banshee card instead of that silly SiS vidcard, because you pointed out how much better the Banshee was, and how comparably priced the two cards were. I am very greatful, because I now have a much better system. The intention of this post was not to publicly hash on you, but rather to get a few of us speaking our minds to effect a change. We are all human here and we all make mistakes. It is easy to take things too personally, but the best thing to do is take things like this and learn a better way from them. Please consider all that we've said, and try to go a little easier. I have been in your position before. When I was 21, I became a lunch cook in a fine dining restaraunt, and within a year was a sous chef (second in command in a commercial kitchen. I was in charge of folks in their 40's and people my age alike. I was resented for being young and in a position of power. I did my best, but I must admit, I was guilty of some abuse of power. It was a tough lesson but I became a much better leader for the experience. To lead effectively is to let underlings do their thing, and to only step in when there is a problem, and best to intervene with compassion and understanding. I am glad I got some backup on this, because it reminds me of a quote that seems to apply: "If three peole call you a horse, check your back because you'll probably find a saddle on it!" Anyway, I know I have been long winded, but this is all as much to help you have an easier and more effective term as moderator/administrator, as it is to better the board. We all do value you here, and just want to benifit everyone involved with the board. I appologize for any embarrassment this has caused, and anything I might have said in anger. Shake on it? Here's to a long and productive term for you and all of the fine people who work for this board!

MY GOD!!!!! and i thought i was the only one .In case none of you have noticed i have been saying this for a couple months now,and i do stand up for what i think is right as markjs does.

collin has deleted my postings from other websites claiming they are false,i provides links to all web content i bring in,so all can verify my claims,i feel a debate is better with proof and not he said she said.

my account has been deleted 2 or 3 times but as mole said it does no-good ,im still here.

on 1 occaision my IP # was posted for all to see including HACKERS,now its not a big deal really unless a hacker gets hold of it,but to me it was a invasion of MY PRIVACY.

I have even e-mailed the webmaster with my complaints to no avail.

ABUSE-lots of it,incase you havent noticed colli8n is NVIDIA BIASED,and he will use his position to affect debates and whatever to go with the nvidia crusade.

    AHHHHHH,that felt good..............
