I have two HD's a 40 gig maxtor 5400 and a 14 gig maxtor 5400 (I'm on a student budget is why they're crap drives) and the 14 gigger I've had for a couple years.
I think it's about to give up on me, it goes VERY slow, much more than it used to. So one day I decided to take linux off of it, cause I didn't want to wait 20 minutes for it to boot. In my ferver of deleting the linux partitions, I went ahead and deleted everything on both hard drives (it was late, gimme a break).
Anyway, now the only bootable hard drive I have is the slow one, and I want to take it out because everytime my system tries to access it, it goes nuts and crawls...
So finally my question: Is it possible to make my 40 gig HD bootable WITHOUT reformating it? Something I've wanted to know how to do for a long time.
Your help and thoughts are appreciated greatly!

No not really. I can choose my boot device but in order to actually be able to boot from that device it has to be set up to do so.
When formatting a diskett or hard disk, if you want to be able to boot from it you have to "copy system files" in Windows... which just gave me an idea... or type "format x: /s" in DOS, the /s tells it to copy the system files to the boot record.
I'm going to go try something real quick, I'll get back to you if it works!

i am guessing u tried to copy the system files from a floppy boot disk to the hard drive?....that is what i would try.....hell if you are doing a fresh intall of windows on that drive you could even remove the other drive and install the os...
