cd-rom trouble

i can not get my cd-rom to read a disk. windows detects the drive and the drive shows up in "my computer". when it boots up the lights comes on. i can right click on the drive in my computer and eject or close the tray. any help would be appreciate.

Is this a new or recently modified machine, or did this problem just recently develop?

it started when i was trying to install a program from a cd. i've had this cd-rom for months

is it all disks or just audio, data, mixed mode, copies etc?
