I'm going to change a Creative 52X non-INFRA CDROM, because it has been working bad since I bought it (1 week).
It reads slower than an ACER 32X and it does not recognize multisession CD's.
So, what do you think of the ASUS 50X?
This one is better...
But in theory, remember, only in theory
I have an ASUS 40x cdrom and it works well. Ive had it for 1 1/2 years now. Unlike my other Acer and Digital research ones. It is hard to find a quality cd-rom nowadays. I perfer lower spinning speeds 32x-40x. they are quieter and seem to last longer. Unfortunately, marketing studies show people think faster is better... so it is very hard to find a cd-rom slower than 50x anymore - except online.
Wait for more opinions, but I like my ASUS.

ASUS makes a good CD-ROM. My Dad uses ASUS CD-ROMS and his are fast and quiet.

I'm sure you've already looked at Kenwood's drives, right? They are the fastest cd-roms out there and are extremelly quiet. There fastest model is a 72x I think. Personally my favorite brand of cd-rom would be Plextor but that is SCSI so you probably wouldnt be interested in that.
That is the exact model I have in my current system, and other than the usual 40X+ problem of added noise, the unit has been a great performer. It is compatible with every CDR/RW program on the market, reads and extracts data perfectly and is very fast at loading games.
I've tried quite a few, but the ASUS was a definite keeper.
If you have the money, I would recommend the Kenwood TRUE 52X CD-ROM. If your RICH, I would recommend the Kenwood TRUE 72X CD-ROM. The ASUS 50X Max CD-ROM works great! They have a good review of it at:
