Mouse flicker

I have reinstalled my Intellimouse after upgrading my computer. It sits under "other devices" with a question-mark,but it works.
The problem is that each time i power on my modem, the pointer starts flickering for about 5 sec. Mouse is P/S2 and modem on Com1.
Anyone recognizes this behaviour?
I haven't got the driver for the mouse,could that be the reason?
I may buy a cordless and hopefully get rid of this problem.
