    CD Drive

Can anybody suggest a quiet(ish) CD drive around the 50x mark??? Also what companies make good CD drives in general???

I'm currently using a 48x creative but that needs to go back in my other computer. It also sounds like a tornado when it goes into full speed...

    Cheers.

Kenwood makes a good CD-ROM drive and it is nice and quiet. I bought a Kenwood True 52x a few months ago and am very happy with it. The Kenwood costs a little more than most drives but it was worth it to not have to listen to a bunch of racket all the time.

Cheers... I'll have to keep me eyes open for one of them, can't find them anywhere so far (in UK). Anybody got any other suggestions???

P.s. The (16MX64) is just the ram configuration.

I bought a Toshiba 48X because from some reviews i read that compared cd roms said it was the quietest of those reviewed. Others reviewed included Creator and kenwood. Also the toshiba scored good in reading cdr which was very important to me.

Hmmmm... I think it is a choice between Toshiba, Mitsumi and Teac. I can't find a Kenwood and all the others I have found out are either very loud or are crap in other ways. Anybody else got any comments???

The Kenwoods are very nice drives but out of 12 that I have know of, 3 have up and died. Just FYI. (They were replaced at no charge)

Teac, Mitsumi, Toshiba are all nice drives. Another notible mention is the Acer 50X. I got one at CompUSA when I was in a hurry and suprisingly it turned out to ge an excelent drive. Very quiet and fast to detect CDs. Great performance, price not terrible, but higher than some. Overall, I am very pleased with this Acer even though I bought it with intention of being temporary. I think it just earned it's perminate spot in my system. (for now... )
