Installation of Mustek 600 CU USB Scanner

I previously installed my Mustek 600 CU USB scanner under Win95 without too many problems.
Upgraded to Win98 - problems! (Thought W98 was supposed to be hassle-free with USB devices.)
Seems to install OK and restarts with 'Win is now finding the software for your new hardware' etc.. No '600 CU' entry appears in Control Panel's USB section (which was present under Win95). I am using the latest driver (that I can find).
The auto cover-sensor feature doesn't work, and a scan will stop after a second or two with a 'Scanner doesn't appear to be connected' dialog. Then the scanner is totally dead until reboot.
Anyone with any experience of this beast? - all assistance & tips gratefully received.

Right click on "My Computer"
Click "Properties"
Click "Device Manager"

Are there any yellow blobs with an exclamation mark by the USB devices?

Have you changed any settings in your BIOS?

OK, heres how to do a 600

Unplug scanner from computer. restart in safe mode, remove all unknown/other/imaging devices from dev manager, reboot. Install scanner software, THEN plug in scanner-may or may not ask for win98 cd.
