I have an A-Open 1040 Pro (10X/40X) DVD ROM drive. I have recently downloaded SiSoft Sandra 2000 and have benchmarked this drive, it was reported as having 4X drive speed and 2X DVD ROM speed. Is this likely to be a faulty drive or is the bottleneck somewhere else on my system. The drive appears to work alright as in reading and installing data and playing DVDs. DMA is installed and I am using the latest 4in1 VIA drivers.

I'd recommend downloading CDSpeed99 for benchmarking your CD-ROM, DVD, and CD-RW drive performance. I would also try comparing the benchmarks between the default Win98 IDE Busmaster Drivers and the VIA IDE Busmaster drivers.
P.S. Here are some benchmark results that I got when I compared the CD-ROM drive speed with the AMD/VIA Busmaster Drivers vs the default Windows 98 SE Busmaster Drivers.
AMD/VIA Busmaster Drivers with an Aopen 48X CD-ROM drive and DMA enabled:
Windows 98 SE Busmaster Drivers with the same Aopen 48X CD-ROM drive and DMA enabled:
