In a nutshell, MMX helps to speed up interger calculations while 3DNOW! helps to speed up floating point calculations.

In a nutshell, you'll notice a big performance jump in the REAL WORLD with 3DNow however the difference with MMX is usually non-existent. All processors worth buying now have MMX support so it comes down to 3DNow vs Intel's new KNI/MMX2/whatever. Both are essentially the same, and yet have a couple of differences (and are incompatible I might add).
