I always thought I got better performance in Win2k than I did in WinXP...and Win98se as well. Everyone always recommends Win98se because its "faster" than Win2k for gaming...not necessarily.

Reasoning for this post was mainly because everyone always recommends Win98 or WinXP if you are a gamer...why? I've never had an imcompatibility with Win2k, and all my 3d tests always seem higher in Win2k, as some of you have said in this thread already.

What the hell am I talking about?! I was thinking that it was another XP vs. 98SE gaming performance comparison. Duh! Sorry mate. Rage3D forums really getting to me.
Yeah, Win2k is absolutely fine for gaming.

Ironically, Windows ME has been the most stable OS I have used to date. It never hangs or crashes, which 2k will do sometimes. Nothing overclocked, mind you. XP is nice, except for my modem, which under 2k works perfectly, but under XP hangs and craashes. This aggrivates me, and I will not buy another modem just so I can run XP. I'm not a big fan of forced upgrades, especially when what I have is fine. It's almost comical how I can get such varied results from the different OS's, especially between 2k and XP, which get amazingly different results.
Oh well, what I have works. I just wish ME had the disk access speeds of 2k/XP.
Give what you cannot keep to gain what you cannot lose.
I've got a dual boot win2k and win98se in my 2nd machine (PII 400@533, 128 MB, V3 2k) and the difference in framerate is not that much at all. But with my given system, I play games in win98se because it uses less memory than win2k. But as on the stability side, win2k is definitely the thing I never had (yet) any crashes and that's a good thing (on the ohter hand, it is more difficult in win2k to configure things than in win98se)

Good thread guys. I'm glad you all agree that Win98 should not be recommended solely based on the thought of it being "faster" than Win2k for gaming or anything else.
