Just saw the circular for Best Buy and see that the VisionTek GF4 MX440 64MB for $179. Isn't this kind of strange to be selling so cheap? and if this is priced right then it sounds like a real cheap card to me.

Actually from what I understand all the GeForce4 MX models are out (420, 440, and 460). That price actually sounds high. The 420 was supposed to be about $100 as it only comes with SDRAM. The 440 and 460 use DDR and are supposed to run about $150 and $180. The GeForce4 Ti cards are following next month. The 4200 should be $200, the 4400 is $300, and the 4600 is $400.
The GeForce4 MX kind of sucks. It is pretty much a Geforce2 Ti for performnance and features. It does come with a faster clocked core and memory (for the 440 and 460), but it only has the 2 pixel pipelines like the original GeForce2 MX. It has none of the Geforce3 vertex shader or programable T&L engine. It is a DirectX 7.0 card. The GeForce4 actually went beyond the GeForce3 with a second vertex shader, more advance FSAA, and dual monitor support (like the GeForce2 MX first introduced). The price for the GeForce4 MX is too close to the price of the GeForce4 Ti4200. It is really not a very cost effective upgrade. System builders though will love it becasue they can sell a system with a junky GeForce4 MX420 (with SDRAM) and market it as a Geforce4 with a whopping 64MB memory. The unsuspecting consumer will think they are getting better than a GeForce3, but they will not.
They are planning on dropping the GeForce3 line complete and use the Geforce2 MX, GeForce4 MX and GeForce4 Ti to fill their line-up. they should have called it a GeForce3 MX. That would have been closer to the truth (something LESS then a GeForce3).
As you have probably figured out I do not like the GeForce4 MX. I don't like the name, I don't like the price, and I will not like the way it is marketed.
AMD Phenom II x4 945 3Ghz | ASUS M4A77TD | 2X WD 1TB SATA 2 hard drive | 2x2GB Corsair XMS3 | nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS | ATI TV Wonder Theater Pro 550 | Antec P-160 case | Antec 650w Earth Watts | LG Blu-ray Super Drive | LG DVD RW | Windows 7 Pro
I second that. The GF4 MX cards do suck. Then again, they should be good for overclocking, but I still wouldn't know how the performance would compare. To match a GF3 TI200, you would need like a MX440 or MX460 clocked as high as it can possibly go. I have a feeling these MX460s will not be the main seller. The MX440 probably will because it has the same components as the MX460, just clocked slower from what I understand. As for the TI line, the 4200 and 4400 will probably be the moneymakers for nVidia.
It seems lot of people thought they were getting the GeForce Ti4600 for $129.00,..
PRESSURE IS MOUNTING on US outlet Best Buy to supply Geforce 4 boards it advertised at $129.99, then withdrawing the offer and saying it was all a terrible mistake.
Here is the mail they sent to those lucky/unlucky price grabbers
Dear Best Buy Customer,
Thank you for your recent graphics card order.
A recent systems error on our web site allowed you to purchase the VisionTek GeForce4 Ti 4600 Graphics Card at $129.99. The actual price for this item is $399.99. Due to the nature of this error, we have canceled your order for this item. We apologize for any disappointment this cancellation may cause.
We would like to inform you that the error has been fixed, and if you are still interested in ordering this product, please visit http://www.bestbuy.com/ComputersPeri...t=521&scat=522 to place your order again. This card is available as a special pre-order. It will begin shipping on 3/4/2002.
Thank you for your understanding. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
While people have the right to be upset that they had their order canceled, you can't possibly expect to get that card for less than half the price of the known market value! You can't tell me that you didn't think it was a steal. A GF4 Ti for less than the GF3 Ti? Please.
Now I can't blame people for taking a chance by ordering one, but I can't believe they are this surprised that Best Buy called them on it. The guy who updated the webpage made a mistake. Best Buy admitted it and apoligized. That's not bad customer service.
I only don't like Best Buy because they never have things in stock.

Come on guys, you KNEW when you placed those orders it was a mistake. You KNEW it.
I understand you taking a chance and ordering it (I probably would have too if I'd seen it in time), but you have no right to get upset that they won't ship it.
