Flashing my Radeon 8500's BIOS worked well for me too. I was a little reluctant at first but my aprehension quickly disappeared when I found out how simple and effective it was. I replaced the OEM BIOS with a Retail one, giving a 275/275MHz default clock and less agressive memory timings. This complemented the voltage mod I did at the time. Check it out here. Next move will be to write custom one and flash that for a 300/300MHz default clockspeed.
I would encourage more people to look into BIOS flashing as a means of setting a good overclock "in concrete".
