What should i upgrade first?

please help, as i cant decide and i have a limited budjet:

CPU: amd k6-2 500mhz
MAINBOARD: acer v75m, 1 isa slot, 3 PCI.
MEMORY: 64mb SDRAM
VIDEO: SiS MMX 530
MODEM: conexant v.90 56k
HD: 6.0GB
CDROM: liteon cdrom ltn403 (4x)

before you point it out, yes i AM aware that that system is pretty mucha dog as far as performance goes, but it was brought 2 years ago and this was pretty good back then.

I would get a GFORCE 2 mx 400 PCI and another 64mb of SDRAM.

Then next you could get a 20 or 30gig 7200 rpm hard drive next. (You will notice the difference)

Last but not least a new 52x cdrom.

There is nothing wrong with the speed of your CPU.

Two years ago a 4x CDROM drive was not considered good. My 6 year old computer has an 8x. I have a 56x CDROM for sale, if you're interested.

I would go with jankerson's advice, except I think you should get at least 128MB more memory.

Presuming that only one thing should be upgraded for the time being,

If you intend to use Windows2000 or any other NT kernel based operating system anytime soon,
Suggest bringing up the maximum memory amount totalling about 256MB or the maximum mobo can handle.
If staying with Windows98SE for a while,
Suggest the purchase of 128MB memory module.

Upgrade the RAM
128 MB should be enough for Win98 SE.
PLEASE upgrade the video card.
Here are 3 choices
1)GF2-MX[budget]
2)GF2 Ti[moderate]or Radeon 7500
3)ATi Radeon 8500 or GF3[hell,yeah!]

hi all, i followed ur advice (god help u if u made a mistake ) and ive upgraded my RAM to 128mb and got myself a Geforce2 MX.
now i just need to start saving again
