Please recommend a video card

A friend at work is looking for a new computer for her son, she say it has to have a great video card since her son plays a lot of 3D games and she plans to also work on some graphics stuff. This is what I have come up with:

Motherboard: ABIT KT7A
Processor: AMD Athlon 1Ghz Socket A
Memory: 256mb PC-133 SDRAM
Hard Drive: IBM 60GXP 20gb ATA-100 7200rpm
CD-ROM: 56x CD-ROM
Floppy: 1.44mb
Sound Card: Soundblaster Live! Value
Network Card: 10/100 NIC

She doesn't want to spend over $1000, and looking at this so far, I'd say it is about $700-$800 with a case. So she probably has about $150-$250 left in her budget for a video card. First thing that came to my mind was ATI Radeon 64mb VIVO, but I've heard you can get GeForce2 GTS 64mb for less than $250 now.

What do you recommend for the price range of $150-$250 for a good video card for gaming and graphics? It doesn't has to be $250 as long as it is a good video card. Thanks for you recommendations!

I'd say Radeon is probably the best choice as it is near comparable to the GTS in games and has superior 2D so better for graphics work. It also has the best DVD which may not be a request now but could be a nice extra to have.

If she'll be doing 2D graphics work then do her a favor and get the Radeon VIVO. I absolutely love mine. I play QIII at 1600x1200x32 maxed, and it's great.
