USB drives connected to laptop defaulting to usb 1 speed

Have this problem with several laptops: USB 2.0 thumb drives or external hdd's connecting at USB 1.1 speeds. Is this a power issue (insufficient power to the drive through the usb connection) that would be solved by connecting through a powered USB hub?

Look in Device Mgr - USB section. Is there an USB 2.0 Enhanced type of entry? If not, check the pc makers web site for drivers.

Issue can occur if/when chipset/usb drivers becoming corrupted.
Another unpleasant reason, defective/damaged USB port(s),

    Cheers.
