Anybody use gadgets in Vista/Win 7? They are gone now, under spoooooooky circumstances that they can contain viruses. Imagine that? Suddenly, they are security risks.
Of course, Tiles are the way to go. So no gadgets for you. We think for you, so you don't have to.
Guess I'll have to switch to Linux full time now...
Microsoft no longer host the widgets, but I don't think that's the end of widgets for Windows 7. They're just cautioning where one gets them from because as always, non-trusted sources could be a security risk.
Windows 8 uses a different development model, one that provides a more seamless web experience. Widgets will now be called Apps and developed using common internet standards instead of proprietary Microsoft methods. It seems fairly logical seeing as almost everything we do these days is somehow web integrated, Microsoft naturally saw the next step as streamlining the OS into that experience.
Whether or not their implementation of that theory works, is yet to be seen.
