Question using old hard drive in new computer

I have a Dell 420XPS-I am putting in a Maxtor N256 IDE hard drive and have bought and adapter cable to convert it to SATA. My question is: Can I wipe this new drive once it is in the computer?* I just want to then format it, but do not need the storage spaqce just yet. Can I do this and if so, is it necessary to create a RAID for the two drives?
