Service Pack 3

Windows updates wants to install service pack 3 on my desktop PC. About half way through the install, it aborts and has to reverse itself to restore files to how they were before the installation. Does anyone no why I may have this problem? Is it crucial that I upgrade to service pack 3?

SP3 has a lot of fixes and security patches, so I recommend it.

Manually download the network installer instead.

I just tried the link and the download aborted about half way through, just as it did yesterday. Do you think I need to turn off my anti virus software prior to trying again? Thanks

Are you running a firewall? It could be antivirus, but I'd suspect a firewall app.

I don't usually recommend alternate download sites for service packs. There are some beta builds out there.

OK, I have never given up on this issue. Tonight I finally successfully installed Service Pack 3 and all of it's updates on my computer. Initially I had the problem when windows update failed. Then I tried to download it from the Microsoft web site and got the same error. I then blew it off for a few months, but a few weeks ago decided to buy the SP3 disk from Microsoft. I was charged $10.80 for the disk and shipping. Again I got the same error (access denied). I finally found a free email support address for MS, and sent an email. MS support emailed me a zip file with an executable file that put my machine into a DOS looking mode, while it looked like it was updating things in my registry. After that was complete, I successfully installed SP3.

These are the instructions I received:

Reset permissions

1. Save the attachment of the email to your Desktop.
2. Right click on the "Reset_subinacl.ZIP file" and choose "Extract"
3. Follow the instructions to extract the files to your Desktop. There will be two files (reset.cmd and subinacl.exe) extracted.
4. Double click the reset.cmd file
5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.
Note: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished, you will receive a message stating "Finished, press any key to continue".

It took a lot longer than a few minutes for the permissions reset, but SP3 and all associated updates are now on my computer.

Does anyone know what "reset permissions" means?
