My SyncMaster 930B monitor stopped displaying. I thought the problem was my eGeForce FX 5200 PCI DVI video card because the fan on the card stopped working. I replaced it with a eGeForce 6200 PCI DVI video card (I only have PCI slots on my motherboard). Still no display. However, when I shine a flashlight on the screeen, I can see the display barely. The monitor accepts both DVI and VGA connections so I changed the display setup on my monitor to VGA and connected it to the video chip on my motherboard, with the same result. I also checked the display options in the menu. Brightness is at 98%. Apparently the problem is related to whatever process the monitor uses to light up the screen. Is there a user fix to this problem, or is the resolution just to replace the monitor?

LCD screens usually use cold cathode fluorescents as backlights and an invertor psu to power them. Your diagnosis would point to either of these. But whether it's cost effective to repair them is another matter. If you had to pay labour costs, probably not, but sourcing parts at a reasonable price could even make a diy repair impractical.
