Dec 06 I bought a notebook for my wife and now the harddrive crashed (to make a long story short). It would be easier to just buy on instead of going back and forth from HP to AAFES. My question is do I really have to pay the 341 for a new one or one with the correct specs off newegg work? Newegg will be less trouble at this point but I don't want to spend my wheels.

I doubt that drive from Hp is gold plated. Get it from newegg. Just be careful to get the correct drive, Sata or IDE. Yours is likely Sata, but check. WD, Samsung and Seagate are all good notebook drives, 5400 rpm still preferred at this point.

You don't need to match the brand or size.

HP, copying IBM, has put code in their notebook bios to prevent you from using a wireless card they didn't sell (at three times the price.) But I haven't heard them doing it for hard drives.

I hope you created the recovery discs. Otherwise, you'll have to order those from HP.

As stated, you can buy the hard drive somewhere else.
