    Western Digital MyBooks

Do the 500GB MyBook Essential and Home editions have the same drive inside? I'm looking at the newer ones with the blue light. Do they use Perpendicular Recording technology? Are they reliable?

how big is the difference in price? i wouldnt worry about reliability, all current harddrives should be reliable (theyve had enough years now to perfect the craft, heh). and perpendicular recording doesnt mean much either... it shouldnt be a deciding factor i dont believe. its a usb drive, performance isnt going to be topps in any case

If you care that much about the type of drive, I would buy a hard drive and a USB enclosure separately. If something happens to the drive, at least you can remove it and try a direct connection to the MB. WD externals are hard to crack open and that would void your warranty.

i opened a wd external... yeah it wasnt much fun but i got it back together no prob. theyre actually tough to open because theyre built really well.

only thing you need to watch for when buying separate external enclosures is the quality of the power supply in them...
