Ive been looking for paths to take on a new compy. I was planning on getting a 6800 Ultra, but if this is its equivalent, I might nab one of these instead. They look cool
Does anyone know how well these overclock? I dont want to end up with another card that overclocks like my 9800. 50 MHz overclock on my 9800 means +1 FPS
And also, does it support everything today, like HDR lighting? Will Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion not have anything graphically disabled?
Also does the 7600 beat it? Basically, whats the best deal for about 200 dollars, give or take 50.

If that's the case then you are heavily CPU-limited.
The X850XT aren't amazing overclockers, TBH. I think about 550-575MHz core is common.

It doesn't support Shader Model 3.0, which is used by a few of modern games for HDR (Oblivion included). Plus it won't support the Havok FX physics extensions.

Not quite, but it's close. Personally I'd go with the 7600GT since you'll get quite a bit of O/C headroom out of it, it supports SM3.0 and you can use two in SLI quite easily.
7600 GT is perfectly in my price range. Looks good, if it overclocks well that leaves headroom. Its gonna be awhile till I upgrade so prices for better cards will have dropped around there. Thanks for the help

You see MuFu's been sick lately, the part of his brain where the ATi information and fanboism is stored has been damaged irreparably.

Oblivion still looks great without HDR or Bloom. They both are performance hogs and if you can stand to be without them, then your game will be much smoother. But I would recomend an nVidia card if you are interested in playing Oblivion well. Not to say that ATi cards don't play the game well, but nVidia has stepped up and released drivers specifically for the game, and I doubt this will be the last driver with Oblivion optimizations. Considering physics processing is going to be added to the drivers for SLI configurations in the near future (maybe they already have in the 84.25 for Oblivion...?) you can't really go wrong with nVidia right now. You can't go wrong with ATi's high-end cards either, but in my eyes the x1k line has differentiated itself somewhat from strictly games performance to HTPC and encoding uses. nVidia still seems to be all about gaming and their performance is showing it lately at almost all price segments.
BTW- when you get to the priory in the first mission of the game, look for a book in the library called "Thief of Virtue." It's hilarious! You'll see why the game got a stricter rating for having sexual content.
Doesn't bloom still work in Oblivion with SM2.0 cards? I know the X8x0s don't support FP blending, so HDR is out of the question.
Yeah bloom works on SM2.0 cards, but the performance hit is nearly as bad as HDR is on SM3.0 cards. The only benefit to using bloom is still being able to use antialiasing.
I can run bloom on my 9800, I see the difference, but I dont care for it. Ive seen HDR on my brothers 6800 GT and it looks great.
Good thing is with Nvidia, as soon as I get enough money, I just get another card and SLI it. Ive sorta made my choice, instead of trying to save money by crippling my computer. Just save and get whats good...So far I have..
7800 GT
Athlon 64 3500+
No motherboard..yet Thinking about THIS one
RAM will be stolen from this computer Im using, same with PSU
Depending on the price and performance boost of socket AM2, I might get it. But as soon as socket AM2 hits the market, socket 939 will have price drops, just like socket 754. Ive considered getting the "true" socket 939 AGP/PCI-Express that was posted awhile back. But looking at the motherboard, it doesnt look that great. Got about 350-380 dollars right now. Making 40 or 80 dollars a month. Usually no allowance from my parents making it 40 (Dad is unemployed) Planning to spend about 550 dollars though
if you want full performance you might want an msi board, i have the a8n-sli and i like it a lot, but from what ive seen its not quite as fast as others. im not sure if anyone could really tell real-world though...

There's no tangible performance gain (yet) on dual 16x PCI-e boards compared to dual 8x PCI-e boards. But the new dual 16x boards have better spacing for dual-slot video cards and they all use passive heatpipe coolers for the northbridge which can be beneficial since northbridge heatsink fans die the fastest usually and they're annoyingly whiny.
