Phoning Australian mobile phone from UK?

I have to call a fellow techie in Australia on his mobile phone

the number I've been given is 0412***912

how would I call this from the UK though?

I guess I would start with 00 , which you use to dial international numbers from the UK , then the dialling code for Aus, which is 61 ? Then maybe knock the leading zero off his mobile number , so it would be something like :

00 61 412***912

does that look right?

I know he'll be in bed by the way, I just need to leave a message

Yeah, that's exactly it. 61 for the country code and drop the leading 0.

Make sure you clarify with this person that "in bed" translates to "phone off". For some of us who are on-call from time to time, "in bed" means you get "it's 3 o'clock in the f@#$ing morning!"
