What's the master, what's the slave?

I'm thinking of putting my hard drive as primary master, my DVD player as primary slave and my DVD +/-RW as secondary master.

Is this the best assignment?

That's probably the best, although you want to install games and stuff from the burner. The basic guide with IDE is you should try to spread the load across channels, because if you access the master and slave on the same channel at the same time they'll have to wait for each other.
