Your thoughts on HP NX6110 notebook...

Meijers locally has it for $779 and is offering a $200 rebate for a final price of $579.

Sounds good to me, how does the 1.4 Cel M with 1mb cache compare to the Sempron 3000+?

I could add 1GB memory and a 7200rpm HDD and be around $800.

I guess it depends on what you need. Celeron Ms don't speedstep, and it will be slower than the Sempron by a little bit. Not that this matters since both machines aren't going to be good at much more than your basic 2D stuff. Otherwise, I like the quality and build of the HP machines these days.

I am really struggling with the notebook choices. Seems that there is a big gap between the "budget" and the "high end" which makes things difficult. I do all of my intensive stuff on my Shuttle rig since the GF6600 is in there.

99% of the notebooks work will be MS Word, Excell, and Web/email stuff on the road for work. Other than that, it will play DVD movies for the boys to watch in the camper this summer (better than the little 7" DVD players!). The campground has WiFi which I will use while on vacation to check work needs so it should have a pretty easy life.

Look at lower mid range, no need for a high end machine to type on, surf the net etc, but stay far away from low end (throw away machines).

We bought a few NX6110s here.. we had ones with 1.6 GHz chips and the SXGA resolution, so they were a bit more costly, but they are good little machines.

I had a chance to compare them with the NX6125 (uses AMD chips, otherwise the same), and they're comperable. But the NX6125 Jankerson linked has some solid options.

The Cel-M is OK, but usually the step up to Turion is, for the price, not a bad move. Unless you keep the Turion pegged at 100%, it also gets better battery life too. I'd personally jump up to the NX6125.

I bought one of the NX6125's about a month ago, and I am very happy with it. Solid little machine. Plus (I know I keep harping on this) a three year warranty from the factory. Pretty sporty.
