Does this thing drink ink?

I just replaced a Black cartridge as the old one was showing lines when printin and said it was empty after a couple of runs with the Nozzle clean utility.

When I put the new one in it also had lines so ran the Nozzle Clean utilitiy a couple of times and now the printer is saying that one is empty!!

Is this normal or is my printer in error?
