I use my phone occasionally; normally to check things like the ISP's outage notices when everything goes dead. At 2.2c/KB it gets expensive fast.
HWC itself hasn't been friendly to portable devices since the vB upgrade. With the old version the pages were set up so you could get the posts on the screen and then just scroll down. With the new layout the table doesn't shrink down.
I'm on the NA-MOU (national access/minutes of use) plan with Verizon, which they don't publicize- lets me browse the web at full broadband speed and it just uses up my airtime minutes So, with a 500 minute plan that I use maybe 50 of that talking in an average month, web browsing is practically free! There are forums I will check over lunch from work and periodically during the day- normally I'll check HWC once a day from my work PC, since it's not a board I'm afraid of being caught reading (lol) which is often enough for daily use. When I've got a hot thread though, I'll just check it random times during the day- walking to the bathroom or whatever, I'll just whip out Treo and click the link to see what's happ'nin!
As far as rendering goes, the new php board renders BETTER on my Treo now than the old board did
I have done in the past using my Palm T3, but it was a novelty that wore off really, due to the hassle of connecting the phone to the Palm, and dialing up etc.
I have however started viewing pages on my Nokia 6230 despite its tiny screen - I think I'm going to get a phone which is more web enabled and cheap data calls next time an upgrade comes around. I think we can use WAP (14.4kbps max) for free on my current contract, but I only use GPRS (64kbps I think) which is free up to 1MB of downloads, but extortionate afterwards which kind of limits me to how much I can use.

P.S. The HwC archive version is a lot more PDA friendly, but you won't be able to post or see pictures. Althought this will keep the bandwidth useage right down.

If you really want web browsing from a handheld, get something with CDMA EVDO. It's capable of over 2 Mbps, although our telco here seems to cap it at around 300 kbps. The latency issues from GPRS almost disappear though; it's a lot snappier to use.
