    VFD display

I'm looking for a decent VFD display for my new htpc. Anyone have any ideas where to find one? I'm looking to get this Antec case, and won't be using the floppy drive bay. Thanks in advance

The only one I could find was this:

    http://store.yahoo.com/svcompucycle/sst-fp53-b-41.html

It is a bit pricy at $81.49 though.

Matrix Orbital makes a few differant ones, but they are expensive too. This one is $85:

This is their home page if you want to see all their stuff:

    http://www.matrixorbital.com/pages/default.asp

If you are into building your own they have some cool little displays avaluable.

I'm looking for one that will display cd and dvd titles, the same as a dvd player would have. I'll take a look around those sites, thanks Todd. Newegg has Silverstone and Ahanix D-Vine cases that come integrated with the VFD displays. But two things...

    1. The Ahanix cases are not very attractive

    2. The Silverstone cases are a bit too pricey. $215+ w/out PSU, $250 with PSU

The Silverstone's are B-E-A-utiful! But found that "custom" look with the Antec while still sitting nicely next to A/V receivers and amps.

$85 is not too bad, after only $105 for the Antec. I've also seen others build their own, will have to search around for that also. Haven't purchased the case just yet, so I can always change my mind and go with Silverstone if my search comes up empty or too difficult to build my own. Anyone ever build one? Thanks

Figure out a way to put an LCD on the front of the case and display whatever you want.

You can get 5.6" car LCDs for under $100. They are powered of 12v, draw only 6w, and connect to your graphics card's TV out. The one I picked up is just under 6" by just over 4.5". I can just barely squease it in 3 CD-ROM bays with about 1/2" to spare.

Then you get Radeon AIW card with a Remote Wonder and you are good to go. You can then scroll through your song library without even turning on the TV. Of course it would not fit in that beautiful case you selected.

PC Alchemy caters to HTPC users. Their prices are a little better also.

Here is another link to a case mod site illustrating vfd's.

Ok, so here's what I put together following the great links from Leoslocks.

    Case
    3.5" I/O ports
I'll need a nice power supply, and possibly a couple quiet fans as this case only comes with one. I still can't believe the price difference on the cases between Newegg and PC Alchemy. Thanks Leoslocks!

I like Todd a's idea better!

I have been spending a little time at HTPC after getting a WinTv PVR 150. I may build around an HTPC instead of a workstation next computer I build. . . hopefully this spring.

We had an Ice Christmas (4" of pure sleet) and a week later set a record high for the date (71 F). I can't remember seeing 70 degrees after Thanksgiving until March. Been there this year already. I may ride my bike this afternoon, get a little exercise.

    Is it Spring yet!

Todd's idea is twice as good as I'm leaning towards, but two things

    1. cost is more (not a huge problem as I plan on using this for quite some time)

    2. I'd like to stick with a case that isn't too large. Definitely no towers. The desktop htpc cases I've seen may not accommodate for an LCD display.

I also don't like the idea of having a case with an LCD display that large (which will be sitting directly underneath my tv in the tv stand). Seems like it would be a distraction to the TV. Probably would be an excellent idea if I planned on watching TV at my computer while browsing the net or doing some paperwork. But I think it would get in the way of the tv and/or gaming.

Ive seen Shuttle SFF cases with one of these LCDs in the front. Also using a slim line CD can save a lot of space if needed. They are not too much more and the addaptor cables are pretty cheap. Here is one I found after a quick search:

    http://www.talix.com/

While searching I did come across some other desplay pannels:

    http://www.crystalfontz.com/

Here is another good idea using a Matrix Orbital:

    http://forums.sudhian.com/messagevie...y&keyword1=lcd

Another idea I saw was to use this little LCD. It is not an LCD TV, but a 7" LCD monitor, so you can actually read text pretty good. It is a bit more expensive at $180, but it has s-video and CTR connectors on it:

    http://www.webzone.us/audio/customer...03&cat=0&page=

Mine is great for watching TV and movies, but is imposible for text reading.

Found a nice wide selection of 20X2 LCD's here . Only downfall is the large lighted keypads. Pricing is lower than the VFD's, and I could always remove the display board and remount it onto the matching drive bay cover on the case. Will make it look "integrated", and not aftermarket. Thanks Todd. Decisions, decisions. I'm still bouncing around on the cases!

You must not have seen that link for for the company that makes that LCD you linked. They have a lot of other ones like that without the buttons or bezal:

    http://www.crystalfontz.com/

They sell serial, USB or wire your own in about any size from 1x8 to 4x24 and they even have bezals for some of them that go into CD bays. They also have software on their site.

They range from about $20-70 and the USB cable is $5 extra. It has a mini plug on one ende and can have either a regular USB plug or a motherboard header.

This is a link to assemble your own kit with color, bezal, and cable:

Well, I have been searching around and have found several sites for diy lcd displays. It's actually a pretty easy set up. Found a 20X4 LCD display with an HD44780 compatable controller on ebay for $15, can use an old serial printer cable I have lying around, make a few simple soilders and mod the case for it and I'm done. Those links you gave are great Todd, and I did see those lcd's they had, was just too quick to reply. I'm trying to get a couple of these so I can put them on all three of my computers. At first, I said WOW to the price, but with all your great help I'm seeing that price become more reasonable.

Man when are manufacturers going to catch on? Who wants crummy side scrolling text anyways? Some one has to come out with a 5.25 x 2 display...
