Fan & Heat Sink for xp 3000+

I am going to purchase an Athlon xp 3000+ Barton. I have not been able to find a list of approved fan/heat sinks for it. Can't find it on AMD web site and they won't answer my e-mail.

I was looking at a Dynatron copper cpu cooler model BH610.

Looking for input.

Here's a few heatsinks you can take a gander at, I would prefer the thermalright heatsink over all of these. So far I have had no problems and love the performance I get out of the Slk900a. But this is a new model so im not as sure how well it works. Gl with finding a heatsink that works best for you.

Second vote for SLK900A, I love the great cooling it gives even to very overclocked CPUs. I just picked up 2 of them for $20 ea at a computer store going out of business, and bought 2 Speeze hugh solid copper 80mm heatsink/fans for only $8.00 each, W0w what a deal! Even the speeze are $20 at Newegg.

Looking at a Thermaltake Venus 7 HSF, is says it is for an AMD Opteron and Athlon 64. Will it fit on an Athlon XP, they are both socket A.

I get no responce from the manufacturers.

No, the Opteron is Socket 940 and the Athlon 64 is Socket 754 or 939. More importantly, it has a completely different way to attach the fan, involving a plastic frame and a backplate.

So basically unless the HS explicitly says that it will work on a K7 or Socket A, it won't.

Note however, that some of TT's fans come in two versions. E.g., there's a "SilentBoost" which works on Athlon FX, and a "SilentBoost K8" which works on Opterons and Athlon 64. Might want to check if that Venus 7 also has a Socket A version.

A quick look on TT's website later... Ooer... a 45 dBA 70mm fan? That thing is way loud for my taste. But it's your eardrums, your choice.

It is the last Socket A HSF that Thermalright released...

I've got the SLK-900A, it keeps my AXP below 45C and that's at 2.3ghz/1.8v. I've heard good things about the SI-97 as well.
