Question Recommend good vid card for HL2 for $150.

    Hey all,

I think I may buy a new video card and I may try out HL2. I'm thinking of this due to a buddy of mine who's real close who has it. The game looks great.

I typically don't play games. I think I'm going to give this one a go though.

    My question is this:

I have been looking at Video cards and I have about $150 to spend. I've been looking at the ATI 9600XT and also the ATI 9800 non-pro. I don't want the SE.

    Any suggestions?

I have to keep myself on the $150 budget. So If I could get a good card for like $135 that would be great.

It seems like the 9600's have 4 pipes and the higher cards have 8 pipes.

I saw a few other threads here about video cards but that was before HL2 came out. Now that it's out what kind of cards do you all have that play it well?

I have heard for HL2 that ATI cards play it better. True?

I'll be putting this card in a P4 1.5GHz box with 512MB RAM.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    OK

Now I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine who I was asking his opinion on this.

He says he has a 9700 Pro that he will sell me.

Does this seem like my best option? To me it does. He knows that I want a card for less than $150

HL2 performs pretty good on just about anything. A Radeon 9800Pro would be a grerat buy, but is over your budget. The Radeon 9600XT is nice too, but I'd just get the 9600Pro as it is pretty cheap and very close in performance. They are cheap too, like this Sapphire one for $106 +$3 shipping here:

    The Sapphire 9600XT is $135 +$.99 shipping:

What else you got in there? You might be able to upgrade something else for that extra $40, like add 256MB DDR or better sound card or speakers.

    Man....

After looking up the 9700 Pro specs I wanna buy that one.

    It's 256bit. 128MB RAM, and has 8 pipelines.

The 9700 Pro seems like a fast card.

Yeah, get your hands on the 9700 Pro if you can. My 9600 Pro plays HL2 very nicely, but for other games and a minimum bit of future-proofness (if such thing exists ), I'd get at least a 9600XT.

Yes the Radeon 9700Pro rocks still. It plays Doom3 at 1024x768 High Quality and HalfLife2 at MAX everything 8xAF (no AA) at 1280x1024. I tried 2xAA, but it was stuttering a bit too much.

They are pretty hard to find now a days for a good price. The Radeon 9800Pro still runs at $190-210:

    Update:

My Buddy is selling me his ATI brand 9700 Pro 128MB for $120.

Also it is a 256bit card with 8 pipelines. I think that's really good right?

    I'm picking it up tomorrow

I'm also going to pick up HL2 tomorrow and see how it is.

    Thanks for the replies

What are the specs of your system Pipey?

Those 9700pro's are still beautiful cards. You will love it along with hl2. My 9600pro even plays it nicely, so you will be all set with a decent system to go along with it.

Yea the 9700PRO is alot faster than a 9600PRO (XT), still a great card for its age.

    Pricewatch lists a 9800pro 128mb for $133.
The Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 128mb has been recently released using AGP, Pricewatch listed just 4 companies with the AGP version, still a little expensive, $233.

The $133 Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro Atlantis is a 128bit version and performs somewhere between the Radeon 9600Pro and XT. If the price sounds too good to be true, it likely is too good to be true.
