    Stealth G460 vs. Viper 550

    Ok here's the system: 350 PII, intel chipset 100 mhz bus, 64M PC-100 Ram, 15" monitor. Now price is a big issue, dont want to spend what I dont need to. Obviously I'm looking at a 2D/3D card. I play games, but not the very new ones. Will probably run the monitor in 800X600 or 1024X768. I'm looking for speed, but still the price is the difference. Is the G460 going to do the job, or is the huge difference in performance make the Viper the better buy?

    The i740 based steath g460 is just too slow. This chip has never been a fast chip at 3d. The image quality is good, but it is slow. You would be better going to a riva 128zx based Viper v330 than a stealth g460. Now with what you have, the viper v550 would post frame rates probably about 100-150% faster than a g460. This is a very significant increase in speed. Another option would be going to a Monster Fusion, based on the voodoo2 banshee chipset from 3dfx. This is alot faster than the v330 or g460, but not as fast a the v550. In 2d, the cards are not too far apart. The viper v550 is the fastest, but 2d acceleration differences will not be highly noticable by most people. The viper v550 also will support the highest resolutions in 2d and 3d. Diamonds list prices (rounded up) for these cards are as follows:
    Viper v330 8mb: 130
    Steath II g460 8mb: 120
    Monster Fusion Z100 16mb: 150
    Viper v550 16mb: 200
    If you are looking for the best price performace ratio, the v330 or monster fusion would be the way to go. If you want the best performance and visual quality, the riva tnt based Viper v550 would be the way to go.

    Ok, that makes it a little easier to pick one. Now the one feature I'm looking at would be the TV output. What does this feature do and which boards support it?

    The tv output allows you to play games and run your windows desktop on your tv. If you have good quality tv output and a really large tv, it can be really fun. I have tv-out on my canopus pure3d card, and I hooked it up to my 26" tv, and my home theater system. What a blast that was playing g-police. Now, if you are considering tv-out, only the riva v330 and v550 have it from diamond. The Monster fusion will have this option, but none are available from what I have heard, I also havnt heard anything about the quality of the output. If tv out is not really important to you, and you want to save money, get the viper v330, it has tv out, but the quality is not the greatest. If you can spare the extra change, get the v550, the tv-output is alot higher quality. The v330 will only do 640x480 at 30hz interlaced (ugh!! 30 flickering hz!!) Now the viper v550 will run 640x480, but it will also do 800x600 at 60hz (still not the best, but way better than the headachey flickery 30hz the v330 puts out) non interlaced. What it comes down to here is, can you spare the 70 dollars more to get the tnt based v550, or is you budget stuck lower. If it is stuck lower, the v330 is a good card for the price. You should be able to find it for less than the 130dollars diamond advertises. As far as I have seen, they are less than 100 now street price for a 128zx based v330 with 8mb of ram.

    I was still trying to figure the exact one to fit my needs, but I dont think I'll get the G460, and will choose between the V330 and V550, depending on the price. (I have to get it through this one company that provides my new pc) Thank you very much for all of your help.

    go for the 550: agp texturing support (just play tresspasser and you'll know why it's important), and opengl compatibility
