The port that the modem is using is currently open by another application
I'm trying to use a pcp samrtlink 56k modem on an XP platform. The response I get is:
"The port that the modem is using is currently open by another application"
I tried to change the port, but all my efforts failed.
How do I identify the offending application, or else, what should I do?

This Site has a lot of information that might solve your problem.

I'm not sure if changing the port will help. Back in the Windows 98 days, I would get this if an anpplication that was using the modem crashed. It would never release the resources.
Is it possible that an application is already trying to access this modem?

Is this a modem that was working and then isn't? Or a new install.
If you do not use any other COM ports then I suggest disabling them in the BIOS and also reenabling Reset ESCD data option in the BIOS. To my knowledge this refreshes device table data for Windows PnP.
