Is this a Dell message board? Oh yah sorry... "escort" might have been the more politically correct one. Besides, they'd never do ho... I mean "escorts" as the one thing that really sucks for them is the "customer support" right now.

What's the exchange rate for that. It would be over $5000 US wouldn't it. And a gaming machine with cheap 2.1 speekers and an LCD. Let see going through the list... It should be an AthlonFX-53 if it is a gaming machine. Why would a gamer get a 400BG 7200 drive. They would get a pair of 74GB Raptors instead. A DVD recorder is nice, but dual layer is almost the same price. Radeon x800XT is fine, but a PE would be even better yet. A 17" LCD is not for gamers at all (especially a Dell one). Get something in the 19-23" CTR with a good refresh rate. Come on... Dell speakers, a Dell MM keyboard, and a Dell 2 button wheel mouse. This is supposed to be a gaming machine! At least a MS Optical 5 button would be nice (like I use... that thumb button is great for reloading). The Dell 2.1 speakers is such a waste of the Audigy2 ZX it is rediculous. They might as well stick with the integrated sound.

I could build something much better for much less than that... easy!

Well think about this... it is supposed to be a gaming machine... you know for those weird enthusiasts out there. The price crappy componants just amazed me. The guts of the system are OK (except for the CPU) and the case is OK too (not what I'd want), but like I said the speekers, mouse, keyboard, and monitor are not for gamers.

Really just get an AlienWare or something:

I like the innovation in the case design though - nice swing door, PSU at the bottom, fanless CPU HS etc.

All helps noisewise. Never understood these people who have typhoon sounding Delta fans.

Apple makes cool cases too, but that does not make them actually run faster. How many gaming machines do you see from Apple? There is a good reason for that.

I always say function over form. It is nice if it looks good too, but it has to be FAST. Like I said, for that much money, there is much better to be had.

Obviously you want the thing to work first, but the depending on the circumstances and the application, form is becoming more important. As PCs become more popular and their uses increase, people are starting to shift these things into their living rooms to use as HTPCs.

As PCs become more 'integrated' into people's lives, the need increases for PCs to blend in - so out go the noisy PCs with 10 x6000rpm Delta fans, and in come the fanless PSUs, fanless CPU heatsinks etc. PCs are starting to become lifestyle accessories and gradually moving out of the realm of technophiles.

So instead of a beige box, people want a few bells and whistles. Whether its people who are into cold cathodes (I never understood what purpose they served, although to each man his own!) or others, like me, who want their PCs to match and look sort of elegant and understated. For example, it's one of the major selling points of Macs - people buy them because the majority of PCs look like crap!

Sure, some of the stuff - the mouse is the prime culprit - is an example of form over function and something which doesn't actually work as well as the MX700 - in fact, the Phillip Stark mouse is absolute rubbish (and I'm regretting my purchase).

But we're never going to get to the stage where a swanky looking mouse is as good as mouse where function is the main production criteria unlesss people continue to innovate and try something different. That's why I think we need companies like Dell or Sony churning out equipment thats different.

Of course, there's always going to be the hardcore overclocking crowd where performance is everything, but I think its good that there's more variety of PCs, peripherals and even users nowadays

That mouse is ugly!!!

Both are easily achevable and the form part is usually the cheaper of the two (well for me at least as I do most of my own mods). I would always build my own computer and I recommend the same to others that have even the tiniest bits of computer knowledge. But like I said, I was just a bit supprised that Dell made a "Gamer's Machine" that does not have games in mind. A $5000 computer with junk keyboard, speakers, mouse, a basic LCD, and ugly case along with a poor choice of almost everything inside the case. If they could not go with an AthlonFX, they should have at least use a P4 EE 3.4Ghz, a much faster drive, and a TOP OF THE LINE GRAPHICS CARD, not the next best thing. The stuff outside the computer would bug me more as a gamer though as the computer is likely fast enough to handle everything pretty well, but lacking suround speakers in a good FPS could mean death from behind. Lacking extra buttons on a mouse and delay reactions, and having a ghoasting blured low resolution image, that likely displayes too few of colors... I like 1600x1200 in FPS like Call of Duty as I can spot snipers quickly at very long ranges.
