I'd say more like 6k in 3dmark03.
And the cpu should make too much difference to the 03 score due to it5 being much more graphics influenced, unlike 3dmark01 which is more all round system tester

Well, last I checked I was getting a bit over 20k on a K8 3200+ in 3DMark 2001 SE. That was without any special optimizations, though (e.g., no dragging the quality sliders down, or reducing the refresh rate, or such), and with CL 3 RAM.
Edit: also with "overdrive" disabled. And generally nothing's overclocked or otherwise running out of spec in this computer.
Haven't tried 2003, so no idea there. Guess I could download it, if anyone is really that curious.

I disagree... a stock 9800XT runs at 412/365 and MarBaS's 9800P is at 411/360. In other words, he's getting much better scores with a slower proc, slower memory with half as much, and a slower graphics card. Heck, I even get nearly 5400 with my 9800P at 405/351 with crappy SDRAM and a 2100+. Something's gotta be wrong. I'd guess that its a driver problem.
MarBaS, how's Redline working for ya?

Well, I just got curious. I got 6465 in 2003, with the default graphics card settings. (High quality mip-maps, high quality textures.)
Pushing the texture and mipmap quality down, only got the score up to 6632. I fail to see much point in that exercise, but lots of people seem to be doing it for bragging rights anyway. So wth
The system is: 9800 XT on a K8 3200+ with 512 MB DDR 400 (CL3), VIA chipset, Audigy 2 sound card. Again, nothing is overclocked. Even ATI's own "Overdrive" is off.
Edit: Hmm... I'll say something's awfully wrong with fishbet's score. Our systems are almost identical, including the same mobo and CPU, except his got twice the RAM and it's probably faster RAM than my el cheapo CL3. Yet mine scores a good 1000 points higher. That's not normal.
Maybe FSAA is still turned on, or something?

try putting your ram to CL2.5 or even CL2 and you said nothings overclocked, unless your really against it overclock that card a little and see what happens.
did you upgrade from say an Nvidia and are still using the same windows instalation? as i noticed a difference after my fresh install after my upgrade from geforce to radeon. i got 10,000 in 3DMark 2001se and then re formated and got 12,000
